When it arrived it was cold and I had to send it back to the kitchen. My wife and sister in law, both vegetarians, ordered a veggie dish and I ordered steak. After kicking up a fuss, they 'found' a table for us in the restaurant. When we arrived at our allotted time, we were told there were no tables available and we would have to sit in the enormous breakfast room. For evening dinner we booked a table at the Grill Room, the only restaurant open in The Palace. Seriously !!! True to their word, it did actually arrive after 45 minutes. My wife ordered a cheese & tomato sandwich and was asked to be patient because it would take 45 minutes to arrive. We then wanted a bite to eat and were told that the only place was at the bar. On arrival we were greeted by the front of house team who were courteous and charming, and we were allocated our rooms.
We had been to the Lost City some 15 or 20 years ago and remembered having a wonderful time, so we decided to go again on this visit to South Africa. Overall, a great place to take children on a short break.…
Another issue is that, other than on Friday and Saturday, there is only one quality restaurant in the hotel and you have to venture to the other venues to get a variety of food. Also the signposting to various parts of this very large hotel are virtually non-existent. In my view the hotel is not quite 5 star because there is not enough attention to detail that you would expect in this class of hotel - for example our room was missing its hairdryer which no one had picked up. The Valley of Waves is not to be missed - basically a seaside resort with a wave machine in the middle of the City. At times it feels like a more grown up Disneyland. You get around Sun City which is quite large by frequent shuttles from the hotels and attractions. There is a large pool and plenty of sun loungers where drinks can be served from a bar. The rooms are comfortable and the staff largely friendly and helpful. The Palace is an amazing building modelled on the former glories of Africa.
